Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that focuses on helping people of all ages and abilities to engage in activities of daily living (ADLs). These activities may include self-care tasks, work, leisure, and social participation. Occupational therapists work with individuals who have physical, mental, emotional, or developmental disabilities to promote participation and independence in daily activities.
OT is a client-centered approach to healthcare. This means that the occupational therapist works closely with the client to understand their goals, preferences, and abilities. The therapist then develops a personalized treatment plan to address the client’s specific needs. Treatment may include adaptive equipment, assistive technology, exercises, and therapeutic activities.
Occupational therapy can benefit individuals with a wide range of conditions, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, arthritis, and chronic pain. The ultimate goal of occupational therapy is to help clients achieve their maximum level of independence and participation in their daily lives.
Conditions We Treat
Some specific examples of how occupational therapy can help individuals include:
- Teaching self-care skills such as dressing, grooming, and feeding.
- Providing adaptive equipment or modifications to the home or workplace to improve safety and function.
- Developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to improve writing, typing, or other daily activities.
- Helping individuals with cognitive impairments to improve their memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
- Providing sensory integration therapy to help individuals with sensory processing disorders to better manage sensory input and improve their ability to engage in daily activities.
- Developing social skills to improve communication and social participation. Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, mental health clinics, and private practices. They often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists, speech therapists, and doctors, to provide comprehensive care for their clients.
